Become a Force of Nature

Force of Nature (FoN) is a strength program designed to build total body resilience so that you can enjoy your favorite outdoor activities without being sidelined with nagging pain or injuries.

You know you need to strength train consistently, but life keeps getting in the way.

It’s time to finally put yourself first!

You’re feeling burnt out, exhausted from the stress of seemingly endless unprecedented world events, and you can’t seem to build a routine you can stick to.

Maybe you notice this happens year after year.

You jump into a new program, excited for something different, but find yourself seeking out another program a few months later.

You notice recurring aches, pains or injuries that keep coming back to haunt you. You’re looking for more support in your movement to help overcome these nagging inconveniences.

You finished up your final hike or ski run of the season, and you find yourself struggling to stay fit until the season picks up again. You feel like something is missing in your current program but you can’t identify it.

You know you’re not lazy, but if you’re staying active all year round, why do your knees feel like they’re going to explode every time you’re going downhill?

Why do your ankles feel wobbly and unstable by the time you make it to the bottom of the mountain?

Why do your calves feel like you walked a million miles after your first hike of the season?

Why do your feet ache after trail runs?

It’s frustrating, but it doesn’t have to be this way.

How would it feel to reduce your injury risk and feel resilient in your favorite activities?

Pain and injuries are common in outdoor athletes, but they’re not normal and you can train to reduce your risk.

A solid strength training program designed for recreational outdoor athletes can help you feel comfortable in your movement practice and in your athletic pursuits!

Imagine being able to shift away from an “all or nothing” mindset and build intentional movement into your day as your schedule allows.

How would it feel to reduce the chaos in your daily life with flexible training options that prepare you for the uncertainty that keeps popping up? Imagine hiking without fear of spraining your ankle, skiing without tweaking your knee, and kayaking without fear of tearing your rotator cuff. Wouldn’t it be refreshing to feel powerful not only in your body but also in spirit and mind?

Introducing Force of Nature

This signature strength training program addresses muscle imbalances and mobility deficits to reduce preventable aches and pains, provides tools for managing chronic stress and teaches you how to train for longevity so you can explore the outdoors without recurring injuries.

Force of Nature incorporates the proprietary ACE Method©, which I developed to hone in on commonly overlooked muscle groups that deserve more attention and contribute to full body resilience.

Learn the exercises you need to help you reduce your risk of injury whether you’re summiting mountains and climbing steep ascents, navigating uneven terrain on hiking trails, skiing through fresh powder or taking a walk deep in the woods.

Hi! I’m Kate Zanoni, founder of the Force of Nature program and the ACE Method.

I spent more than a decade treating patients in the field of physical therapy and noticed there’s a huge missing piece in the fitness industry when it comes to strength training. I feel called to help fill in the gaps and help build more Forces of Nature because I want you to feel empowered throughout your fitness journey. Let me share a bit about my journey and how I got to this point.

20 years ago, I was a compulsive gym goer. Working out became an obsession and I’d spend 2-3 hours in the gym 6-7 days a week. I did at least an hour of cardio followed by lifting on all the machines and finished with 30 mins of abs. Oh, and don’t forget the static stretching afterwards. I felt like I had to do the most. I thought the more I did and the harder I worked, the more results I would see (insert eye roll here, I know). I did nothing to focus on recovery and didn’t take lifestyle factors into account, either. (double facepalm)

When I was a freshman in college, I started experiencing back pain seemingly out of nowhere. I had gone from completely obsessive workouts to a stressed out college student getting very little sleep, eating shitty dining hall food and sitting A LOT. I got shuffled from doctor to doctor with no resolve to the recurring pain. My primary care physician sent me to my OB/GYN who sent me to a sports medicine specialist.

Finally, an orthopedic surgeon told me I needed surgery and I’d never play sports or run again. He said the only options for my unresolved back pain was surgery and returning to my active lifestyle wasn’t going to happen. Well, that wasn’t a viable option for me and I refused to let that prognosis seal my fate. After I got a second opinion with no clear diagnosis or solution, I continued pushing through the pain.

I discovered, through many trials and failures, that my approach to health was all wrong. I was stuck in a cycle of “all or nothing” and it took years of pushing through pain to learn exactly what NOT to do.

I learned a lot on my journey and I have made it my life’s purpose to share the contents of my brain with as many people as I can so that you, too, can unleash your inner badass and feel confident in your abilities on and off the trails.

After a completely unrelated career as a writer/editor, I returned to school. I studied anatomy and physiology, kinesiology and physical rehabilitation. I spent 10 years working in the field of physical therapy treating patients that wanted nothing more than to return to their active lifestyles pain free and without worry of re-injury. I learned even more from real life experience in and out of the clinic and from other movement professionals in the field who questioned the status quo than I ever did in school. Today, I continue to study the latest research in exercise science, neuroscience and pain science to pass that knowledge onto my community.

Over the years, I saw a multitude of specialists and had all the diagnostic imaging under the sun without any definitive answers or a plan to resolve my pain. Among the laundry list of diagnoses I received, I was told I had SI joint dysfunction because of my scoliosis and that I’d have to live with some level of discomfort for the rest of my life. Another provider gave me painkillers for my lower back pain. I only took it a handful of times and stopped completely after experiencing chest pain with each pill. The medication, Vioxx, has since been pulled off the market because it was shown to cause heart attacks and was directly responsible for killing 88,000 people. I dodged a bullet, but I was still in pain.

After struggling with bouts of recurring pain off and on for 15 years since the initial onset, I sought help from an orthopedic surgeon I trusted. (He often sent patients my way for rehab to help them avoid surgery, so I knew he would be honest about my diagnosis and prognosis. He wouldn’t recommend surgery unless it was a last resort). Sometimes I was pain free. Other times my lower back hurt and I felt like I had a pulled hamstring. It was actually irritation of my sciatic nerve masquerading as hamstring pain. When I rotated my leg into a pigeon pose, my hamstrings would catch and send pain shooting down my leg to my knee.

Based on orthopedic testing, I suspected I had a labral tear and hip impingement. The ortho confirmed my suspicion. I spent too many years trying to grin and bear it. I pushed through pain and tried to stretch it away at the gym. I spent time stretching at a yoga studio and took deep flexibility classes at a pole dancing studio in an attempt to improve my flexibility, thinking that was the answer. I knew better but I was my own worst patient and thought I didn’t have time to dedicate to a specific strength training program to rehabilitate myself.

The 12 weeks I spent attempting prehab was futile. I never had an injury or specific incident that caused my pain. More than likely, it was the way my hip formed naturally as I was growing and the fact that I kept pushing through the pain and trying to stretch it away that caused my labrum to tear over time. My emphasis on stretching and deep flexibility worsened my symptoms and left me with very few options.

Eventually, I developed bursitis in both hips and couldn’t sleep on either side (I’m a side sleeper).  I reached a point where I was in so much pain that I couldn’t workout anymore. Even walking up the four stairs into my condo was agonizing. I threw in the towel and had surgery.

My surgeon told me what I already knew: I had pushed through pain for too long and focused on the wrong things at the gym. If I had changed course sooner, I could have avoided surgery altogether and bypassed over a decade of undiagnosed pain.

After my surgery, I was still having sciatic symptoms all throughout my recovery. Dry needling helped very short term, but my symptoms would return soon thereafter.

Even as a healthcare professional myself, I still had a lot to learn and a lot of myths to unlearn. I changed my focus from stretching, cardio, chasing “flat abs'' and using all the machines in the gym to active mobility work. I incorporated accessory training to target stabilizing muscles and started lifting heavier weights. I chose a mix of dumb bells, kettlebells and barbell training. I needed weights that weren’t attached to machines so I could strengthen through my full range of motion and focus on developing real core strength.

I focused on building control instead of HIIT. I intentionally targeted deep stabilizing muscle groups that typical training programs miss. I was able to connect with my core in a way I had never experienced with crunches, sit-ups or circuit machines. Best of all, my hip and lower back didn’t hurt anymore and my sciatic symptoms dissipated.

For the first time in my adult life, I can now squat ass to grass. Prior to switching up the way I trained, I couldn’t squat beyond parallel (even after my recovery from surgery). Now I can spend all day in my ATG squat doing yard work without hip pain and lift my 70-pound dog into my car without tweaking my back – direct effects of the right combination of mobility, strength and control – something you can’t achieve with static stretching, ab routines and hours of cardio. I’m also able to hike 15+ mile trails up and down steep terrain in the Rocky Mountains without hip or knee pain, XC ski in the Sawtooth Wilderness without a peep from my hip or lower back, and SUP the Snake River without losing my balance and going ass over tea kettle into the water below.

I learned how to fill in the gaps in my training so that 3 days per week is enough. I can fill the other days of the week with non-gym focused activities I enjoy, like hiking and SUPing….or I can rest. Either way, I won’t lose progress from not training 5-7 days a week. I learned how to adjust my training as needed based on how I feel each day, prioritize rest days without feeling guilty for missing time away from the gym and build on the basics with a solid foundation because fancy does not equal effectiveness. I want that for you, too.

Not sure if Force of Nature is right for you?

  • You have a lot on your plate, competing priorities and don’t have the energy to program your own workouts because you’re too busy living your life and doing all the things. It’s time to prioritize yourself and start feeling confident in your body’s abilities.

  • You’re sick of program hopping, picking random workouts from gurus off social media, or feeling stuck in a cycle of recurring injuries or nagging pain that keeps you sidelined from your favorite outdoor activities.

  • You want to fill the gaps in your training regimen and learn how to implement the right exercises for increased core strength without wasting your time on endless crunches and sit-ups.

  • You want to feel like the badass you know you are without worrying about whether you’re going to sprain your ankle, hurt your knees, or injure your back.

  • You feel like you do the most, but you still don’t feel confident navigating rocky terrain because of ankle instability and balance deficits, feel apprehensive about steep declines because your knees feel wonky, and fear facing another injury that will sideline you yet again.

  • You know deep down that building lasting strength is possible, but you’d like to understand why you’re doing what you’re doing with guidance, supportive coaching and done-for-you programming.

  • You’re ready and willing to commit 3 days per week to reframing your “all or nothing” mindset, putting bullshit fitness myths to rest, and practicing what it means to be a Force of Nature.

  • You’re tired of trying so hard to stop recurring aches and pains only to have them pop back up again and again.

  • You want to learn how to build core strength that is useful for real life (not just “neutral spine” exercises lying on your back), improve your balance and ankle control to reduce clumsy accidents, and achieve total body strength, mobility, endurance and resilience to carry you into the rest of your life.

You’ll gain the tools to be able to gauge when to progress, when to hold back, why specific exercises are important for resilience and how those exercises relate to you. Most importantly, you’ll learn how the performance of each exercise inside the program translates to your performance on the trails and in everyday life. The best part is you get to choose when it fits into your day.

What Force of Nature is NOT:

I am not a weight loss coach. I will NEVER ask you to weigh yourself, take measurements or share progress pictures. You deserve better than trying to shrink yourself, both physically and psychologically. You are more powerful than an arbitrary number on the scale or your clothing size.

I am not a nutritionist or a registered dietitian. I do not offer meal plans, calculate macros, weigh food or track calories, nor will I ask you to do so. 800-1,200 calories per day sustains a toddler. You deserve to fuel your body for the demands you place on it with food you love (which includes carbs) in adult-sized portions because you are a grown-ass adult.

Force of Nature is not cardio-focused group training with Barbie weights. In order to build lasting strength and long-term resilience, you need to lift more than 5-10 pounds under a progressive strength training program.

(Hint: Your day pack easily weighs more than this. If you’re like me, your dog does, too).

Force of Nature is not HIIT. Although high intensity interval training has its place, FoN is a program focused on unlocking your mobility, building strength in major stabilizing muscle groups, improving your balance and core stability, and building a resilient body that can withstand the stresses life places on you. FoN uses principles of exercise science, pain science, neuroscience and orthopedic conditioning to offer much more than getting your heart rate up or leaving you sweaty and breathless.

I won’t promise you bulletproof strength in a matter of several weeks because that is complete bullshit. It takes time and dedication. You are responsible for your own results and everyone’s bodies respond differently to exercise. To train for life, you have to train for longevity. You will learn how to lay the groundwork for sustainable habits going forward and gain a better understanding of what a comprehensive training program looks and feels like so you can continue your favorite activities for years to come. No more burning out. No more falling off the wagon (there is no wagon anyway).

I won’t promise you a pain-free life because shit happens and you cannot guarantee you’ll never get injured. Injury prevention is a myth, but you can reduce your risk of injury and decrease recovery time with strength training that is specific to your lifestyle. (If you’re like me, you’re clumsy AF and fall over your own feet. Shit happens.) But you will learn how to build resilience so when you trip over your dog, smack your shin on the edge of the open dishwasher or roll your ankle hiking, it won’t leave you down and out for weeks.

Whether you’re going hard everyday, fearing you’ll lose progress if you miss a day or struggling to get back into a routine after all these “unprecedented times” turned your fitness regimen on its head, Force of Nature is calling you.

This no-nonsense approach to building sustainability in your fitness leaves room for grace so you don’t sacrifice your sanity for strength and resilience. Done-for-you programming keeps you active so you can continue your passion for the outdoors while living your busy lifestyle. Put the power back in your own hands and train for longevity.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Each workout will average 30-45 minutes. Some workouts run a little shorter, some run a little longer. The best part about flexible programming is you get to fit it into your own schedule on your own time. There are no set days/times required to complete your programming. Make it work for you and I’ll meet you where you are.

  • I will be providing form checks & feedback and offering compassionate coaching & accountability inside the TrueCoach app. You can also ask questions and interact with me inside the private virtual community.

  • Although this program caters to outdoor enthusiasts, it is not a prerequisite for Force of Nature. I recommend you have at least a foundation in intentional movement. The program does offer options for beginners and advanced clients to meet you where you are in your journey. Force of Nature programming can stand alone or it can be used to complement your current fitness regimen.

  • You will need to have access to light, moderate and heavy (for you) resistance bands, dumb bells and a stability ball. Kettlebells and a yoga block are also highly recommended.

  • For the purposes of Force of Nature, this is subjective and depends on what feels light, moderate and heavy to you. Use the guidelines below. This is a suggestion for gauging how much resistance you need, but please keep in mind it will vary for everyone.

Light = You can do 10-12 repetitions with good form.

Moderate = You can do 8-10 repetitions with good form.

Heavy = You can do 5-6 repetitions with good form.

If you can do 20+ reps with good form, it’s probably time to increase your weight/resistance.

  • My community of athletes believe that Black, Brown, Asian and Indigenous Lives Matter, Love is Love, Science is Real, Women’s Rights and LGBTQIA+ Rights are Human Rights and Climate Change Exists.

There is no room for hatred, bigotry, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, racism, fat phobia, or pseudoscience in my program. I will not tolerate conspiracy theories or belittling of any kind.

If these values don’t align with your own, Force of Nature is not the program for you.
